Thank you for registering your interest in adjudicating Macquarie University Law Society (MULS) Competitions. We encourage you to speak to your colleagues and ask them to sign up as well. There are five competitions that we are offering to students this semester. They are First Year Mooting, Negotiations, Trial Advocacy, Letter of Advice Writing and Paper Presentation.

First Year Mooting

This competition is the most prestigious and testing competition available for law students in their first year of study. Students will be required to prepare written submissions and present oral submissions on appellate matters. As this is the first time students will come face to face with the art and skill of mooting, we anticipate that they will experience a steep learning curve while they compete. We encourage you to test their knowledge of the law and understanding of the legal process. Rounds run for approximately 90 minutes. Areas of law typically include Criminal Law, Contracts and Torts. More info is at First Year Mooting.

Negotiations

This competition is a very popular competition and it tests students’ ability to serve their client’s interests at the negotiations table. Students are required to collaborate with the other side to provide feasible solutions to take back to their client in what are usually quite complex matters. Due to the popularity of this competition we ask that you please consider offering your time to adjudicate this competition. Rounds run for approximately 90 minutes. More info is at http://www.muls.org/competitions/negotiation/

Trial Advocacy

This competition is very popular amongst students who want to take on a career in advocacy. The competition is essentially a snapshot of a first instance trial. Matters are either criminal or civil and students will take the role of either prosecutor or defence counsel, or appear for the plaintiff or defendant. Once competing, students will give opening statements, run through examination in chief and cross examination questions with two wtinesses, and give closing statements. Students are ultimately tested on their understanding of evidence admissability and their adevocacy skills. Rounds run for approximately 90 minutes. More info is at http://www.muls.org/competitions/witness-examination/

Letter of Advice Writing

This competition is new for 2011. Students will be asked to write a letter of advice to their client based on facts presented to them in a problem scenario. The question will likely be a simple torts or contracts matter. We are looking for a panel of judges to spread the work of marking so if you can give up a few hours of your time that would be great. More info is at http://www.muls.org/competitions/letter-writing/

Paper Presentation

This competition requires students to submit an essay that they received a strong mark for. The essays are short listed, and students are then required to present the thesis of their essay for 10 minutes in front of a panel of judges. If you are interested in hearing about developing areas of law, or simply testing students on their ability to present their ideas in the public forum, this competition is for you. Why we appreciate your help

Never before have we had such high demand from students to participate in our competitions. In 2011, we will be offering 8 separate competitions that will accommodate over 500 students. Without your help, we cannot provide this service to our law students.

In 2010 at the Australian Law Society Association (ALSA) Conference in Adelaide, Macquarie University were crowned the ALSA Mooting and Client Interview champions beating over 42 law schools from Australasian law schools. As a result, MULS sent teams to represent Australasia at the Commonwealth Law Moot in India and the International Client Consultation Competition in the Netherlands in 2011 with much success. In 2011, MULS was crowned the ALSA Negotiations Champions. This puts Macquarie University law students at the forefront of the competitions field, being the first and only university to have won all 6 competitions at the ALSA conference. We hope that with your expertise you can provide our competitors with feedback and assistance that will prepare them to continue to compete at such a high standard at the ALSA conference in 2012 and in future years.

MULS is deeply grateful for your time and assistance. We look forward to receiving your support, without which our competitions would not be of such high calibre. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me directly.
