Professional Mentoring Program

Introduction
The MULS Professional Mentoring Program (“PMP”) is a new initiate from MULS designed for students in their penultimate year (4th year or equivalent) of a law degree from the Macquarie Law School.

What is the PMP all about?
The PMP is designed to increase face-to-face contact between leading law firms and combined-law students from Macquarie Law School. It is hoped that the program will help firms establish a relationship with some of the best students from Macquarie Law School. At the same time, students will have the opportunity to gain valuable insight into the working life and culture of the firm of their choice.
The program aims to pair students with a nominated lawyer from one of the partner firms.

How does it work?
Up to four students will be paired with a lawyer from each of our MULS PMP partner firms. Students are only entitled to elect one firm of their choice. Please understand that there are limited places in this program but we hope that as many students as possible can gain benefit from the MULS PMP.
The extent of the PMP relationship is up to each individual firm, but it is envisaged that this will involve the provision of a nominated lawyer’s contact details to each successful applicant. It will then up to the lawyer and student to make their own arrangements to meet/talk. This could be as simple as a short coffee or a quick phone call – it is up to you!

Who are the MULS PMP Partner Firms?
•    Allens Arthur Robinson
•    Blake Dawson
•    Clayton Utz
•    Freehills
•    Mallesons Stephen Jaques

Am I eligible?
To be eligible for the MULS PMP students must:
a) be enrolled in the penultimate year of a law degree at Macquarie University as at 30 April 2010;
b) be eligible for the award of LLB (Honours – either first or second class) based on their current level of academic achievement; and,
c) have submitted a 200 word profile in a similar format to a Summer Clerkship application cover letter, nominating one firm of their choice, and a hard-copy of their academic transcript in an envelope provided directly to Wendy Calvert (PA to the Dean, office W3A 531).

So to recap, how do I apply?
Step 1: Check the eligibility requirements under a) and b), above.

Step 2: Write up your 200 word profile, directed at the nominated firm of your choice. Please include your contact details and explicitly mention the nominated firm of your choice on this profile. See the MULS Clerkship Guide 2009 for more help here.

Step 3: Obtain a hard-copy of your academic transcript.

Step 4: Seal the profile and the academic transcript in an envelope, with your name, contact details and the PMP partner firm of your choice on the front.

Step 5: Deliver the sealed envelope to Wendy Calvert (PA to the Dean, office W3A 531).

Note that academic results for ‘LAW’ prefix units will be verified by the Dean of the Macquarie Law School or his nominated representative/s from the law school.
