Fellow law students,
My name is Nicholas Lennings and I am your 2010 Equity Officer. The Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience is a program that has been recommended to me by law students and I am pleased to announce that MULS is actively supporting the program at Macquarie University and particularly amongst law students. I could not speak more highly of AIME; a program that seeks to help indigenous youth through high school and into university studies. The program is run on campus. All you need to do is fill in a form, send it to Nathan Lovett at AIME (nl@aimementoring.com) and spend 1 hour per week over 17 weeks helping young people to better themselves. You'll learn new skills and better yourself in the process.
ABOUT THE AIME MENTORING PROGRAM
AIME is a mentoring program that partners University students in a one on one mentoring relationship with local Indigenous high school students to help them get through school. AIME came to Macquarie University for the first time in 2009, and will continue in 2010. You have a chance to become a mentor in this worthy program.
Without the time of the University mentors such as yourself, these first two quotes will hang around:
“I know ten drug dealers, but I don’t know any doctors.” Mentee*
“I don’t know anyone who’s been to uni.” Mentee
You can help us change this.
· “Whether you want to help others or develop yourself as a person AIME is a great way to do both. Being around a group of people who give a s#*t is inspiring.” Mentor*
Apply to be a mentor. It’s one of the most real things you will do at University. It’s 1 hour a week. For 17 weeks. It’s the same amount of time as two nights out on the town and you can change someone’s life.
The application process is currently being finalised. Please email Nathan if you wish to apply– nl@aimementoring.com.
