21/06/2011 - Mentoring@Macquarie

The mentoring awards evening was an excellent initiative run by Mentors @Macquarie. It was a way to congratulate all mentors and team leaders that dedicated their time helping first year students settle into life at Macquarie University. Drinking our champagne and munching down on canapes, we listened to speeches form our fantastic Transitions Team and other distinguished guests. Some were privileged enough to receive awards for their achievements this year, assisting with orientation day, O-week and other activities. All mentors and mentor leaders should be proud of their efforts this year and we hope you will continue to be involved hereafter!

Please note all mentoring certificates are now avaliable from they will be available for pick-up between the hours of 10am-1pm and 3pm-4:30pm from the Transition Office. Any problems please contact The Mentors @Macquarie Team (Kelly, Mike, Oona, Misha, & Emily).

16/04/2011 - Credit Points and Honours Requirements

At the most recent Law School Meeting I had our President raise two questions on my behalf which are likely to have been in the back of many students minds. Please read what follows:

1. FOR STUDENTS WHO HAVE ONLY COMPLETED 70 OR 71 CREDIT POINTS WITH THEIR LAW DEGREE(i.e. are one or two credit points below the 72 cp requirement).

You must complete an additional subject - the belief that students can complete an additional assessment task is not correct. We advise that you do the maths on your CP's and see if this will affect you. Should you not complete a minimum of 72CP's in Law prefixed subjects you will NOT be eligible to graduate.

2. HONOURS REQUIREMENTS

Changes to the Honors System will occur in 2013. We will advise you once we know the exact impact upon students, however at this stage it is the consensus of the Law School that this change will affect all students, regardless of when they commenced their studies. At this stage we do not know what the proposed changes will be.Should you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me at educationofficer@muls.org

04/04/2011 - Get Involved in Education!

Applications for the Education portfolio are closing FRIDAY 29th April. There are many opportunities to get involved, so don't miss out!The Education portfolio is looking for volunteers to lead its projects and initiatives for 2011 right now! Three divisions are seeking a team, but more importantly a Chairperson:

  • Student Learning Experience Sub-Committee is looking for a team of people who have a drive to review their current learning and teaching experiences and make submissions to MULS and to the law school to help develop the engagement between students and the curriculum.
  • Speakers Sub-Committee is looking for someone who is interested in about bringing interesting people within the wider community to come to present to students their passion.
  • Grants Sub-Committee is looking for coordinators/facilitators to investigate the available grants and scholarships that would be available to students to start great initiatives such as PAL.

If you're kicking yourself for not getting involved in the Education Team initiatives in Session 1, now's your chance to jump on the bandwagon!

There are great opportunities to develop specific skills and knowledge in law, as well as general skills such as teamwork, leadership, organisation, and professional communication, while still enjoying yourself and meeting students, academics, legal practitioners, and members of the judiciary.

We will take successful applicants through workshops that will teach you how to fulfil your role with ease. We do promote these Sub-Committees to be your own and encourage students who have grand ideas or want to get involved to apply!

All applications should be sent through to educationofficer@muls.org and include your name, year of law, student number, email, Sub-Committee your applying for and 300 words as to why you should be the chairperson or team member of the Sub-Committee of your election. I look forward to hearing from your soon!
